Essiedu, who has been cast as Severus Snape, revealed in an interview with The Times of London that he received multiple threatening messages on social media. Some messages reportedly told him to “quit or I’ll murder you,” while others claimed they would attempt to find his home address.
The backlash began shortly after HBO released the first official trailer for the reboot series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Despite the controversy, the trailer drew massive attention, reportedly reaching 277 million views within its first 48 hours.
Authorities have responded to the situation. Hertfordshire Constabulary, which oversees the area where filming is taking place, confirmed it is aware of the threats. The production is based at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. While Essiedu has not filed a formal police complaint, officers are said to be in direct contact with the production team and are monitoring developments.
In response, HBO and Warner Bros. have increased on-set security measures to ensure the safety of cast and crew. The studio has also provided actors with social media safety training to help them deal with online harassment as production continues.
The series features a completely new cast, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore.
HBO has not issued a detailed public statement about the threats but has reiterated its support for the cast. Production on the series is ongoing.
The Harry Potter TV reboot is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026.
