2023 Incident Returns to Spotlight
The case dates back to February 17, 2023, in Herriman, Utah, when an argument between Paul and Mortensen escalated into violence.
According to police records and video footage published this week by TMZ, Paul can be seen kicking and hitting Mortensen and placing him in a headlock while he attempted to record the situation. The footage also shows her throwing multiple heavy metal barstools.
During the altercation, Mortensen is heard shouting that Paul’s young daughter was nearby—and had been struck by a chair. Police later confirmed that the 5-year-old child sustained a visible head injury, described as a “goose egg.”
At the time, Paul faced multiple charges, including felony aggravated assault and child abuse. In August 2023, she accepted a plea in abeyance, pleading guilty to aggravated assault. Under this agreement, if she completes her probation—set to end in August 2026—the charge could be reduced or dismissed.
New Footage Sparks Immediate Fallout
The resurfacing of the incident in March 2026 has had swift and dramatic consequences.
Just days before its scheduled premiere, The Bachelorette was abruptly canceled by ABC and its parent company Disney. The network stated it is “focusing on supporting the family.”
Production on Season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has also been halted indefinitely, with cast members reportedly expressing discomfort continuing filming amid the controversy.
In addition, brands—including Cinnabon—have cut ties with Paul, ending sponsorship deals linked to her and the shows.
Fresh 2026 Allegations Under Investigation
Separate from the 2023 case, new legal trouble has emerged.
The Draper City Police Department confirmed an active domestic assault investigation tied to incidents on February 24 and 25, 2026. Authorities say allegations have been made by both Paul and Mortensen.
On March 17, Mortensen filed for a protective order, alleging multiple instances of physical violence, including claims that Paul choked and struck him in the presence of their young son.
He is also seeking sole custody.
In a surprising twist, Paul’s ex-husband, Tate Paul, was reportedly present at the courthouse the same week, also pursuing a protective order.
As of now, no formal charges have been filed in connection with the 2026 incidents, but the case is under review by prosecutors.
Legal Stakes Rising
The new allegations carry significant legal risk for Paul.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill confirmed that his office has requested police reports tied to the 2026 investigation.
If the claims are substantiated, they could constitute a violation of Paul’s probation. That would jeopardize her plea deal and could result in the original felony conviction being formally entered—or potentially lead to jail time.
Conflicting Narratives
Both sides have pushed back against the allegations.
Paul’s representatives claim the resurfaced video was “selectively edited” and part of a campaign to damage her reputation. They also allege she has endured years of abuse and is preparing to defend herself.
Mortensen’s representatives, meanwhile, deny that he leaked the footage and say his primary concern is the safety of their child.
Where Things Stand Now
As of March 20, 2026:
• No new charges have been filed in the 2026 case
• A police investigation remains active
• Prosecutors are reviewing evidence
• Major TV projects involving Paul are canceled or paused
• Sponsorships have been terminated
What began as a resurfaced incident has now evolved into a complex and high-stakes legal battle—one that could have lasting consequences for Paul’s career and legal standing in the months ahead.
