Speaking to ScreenRant, Serkis addressed ongoing speculation about whether Viggo Mortensen would return to the role. He said the production has decided to recast Aragorn and is currently searching for a new actor.
The film is set in the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. It will follow Gandalf and Aragorn as they track down Gollum before he can fall into the hands of Sauron. The story is expected to explore both the physical journey and the psychological strain of the hunt.
According to reports, the decision to recast was largely due to the timeline of the story. Aragorn will be portrayed as a younger “Strider,” and Mortensen, now 67, was considered too old for the role, even with the option of digital de-aging.
Andy Serkis will direct the film and return as Gollum. Kate Winslet has also joined the cast, although her role has not been revealed.
There are also unconfirmed reports that Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood may appear, possibly using de-aging technology or in limited framing scenes. Actor Leo Woodall has been mentioned in casting rumors for Aragorn, but no official announcement has been made.
The project is being produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the team behind the original Lord of the Rings trilogies.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
