Tom Cruise is set to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, with the studio building the production schedule around his availability. Miles Teller and Glen Powell are also expected to reprise their roles as Rooster and Hangman. Behind the camera, Ehren Kruger is working on the script, with Joseph Kosinski likely to return as director and Jerry Bruckheimer producing.
The film is currently in the early development phase. According to Bruckheimer, the team has settled on a story concept that Cruise supports, but timing remains uncertain due to the actor’s ongoing commitments. Cruise is currently involved in other major projects, including a film with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and the final installments of the Mission: Impossible series.
Industry estimates suggest filming may not begin until late 2026 or 2027.
Although official plot details have not been released, early speculation points to themes involving the growing role of drone warfare and artificial intelligence in military aviation. Another possible direction is a continued focus on Maverick’s relationship with younger pilots, potentially setting up a transition toward his retirement.
Paramount has not confirmed any additional casting beyond the returning leads. Reports or trailers circulating online that feature other major actors are not official and are considered fan-made content.
