In an emotional video posted to Instagram over the weekend, Momoa described the situation as “gnarly,” as relentless storms dumped nearly 12 inches of rain across the island. The downpour triggered severe flooding, widespread power outages, and emergency evacuations in multiple communities.
“We’re safe for now, but there’s a lot of people who weren’t,” Momoa said, visibly shaken, after confirming his family had to leave their home when rising waters and power loss made conditions unsafe.
Authorities are calling this the worst flooding event to hit Hawaii in two decades. Emergency crews have been closely monitoring critical infrastructure, including the Wahiawa dam, which reached dangerous levels before water began to recede late Sunday.
Despite being displaced himself, Momoa has quickly stepped into action. Alongside his partner, Adria Arjona, he has been helping distribute food on Oahu’s west side. The couple partnered with local favorite Zippy’s to provide meals for families staying in shelters.
He also urged his followers to “spread aloha” by checking on neighbors and supporting those affected.
Rescue operations remain ongoing, with more than 230 people already saved—some airlifted from rooftops by the Honolulu Fire Department and National Guard.
Governor Josh Green warned that the total damage could exceed $1 billion, with significant impacts on infrastructure including schools, roads, and hospitals.
While no fatalities have been reported so far, several people are receiving treatment for hypothermia as conditions remain hazardous.
Momoa ended his message with a powerful reminder of community strength: “It’s showing up for each other when it matters most.” He also hinted that a fundraiser to support North Shore relief efforts is currently in the works.
