The announcement marks the first time the original trio will appear together on screen since The Mummy Returns. Although Hannah appeared in all three earlier films, Weisz did not return for the third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where her role was recast.
The new film is scheduled to release in theaters on May 19, 2028. It will be directed by the filmmaking duo known as Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively recognized as Radio Silence. The script is written by David Coggeshall.
Production is expected to begin in fall 2026, with filming planned in London and Morocco.
According to reports, the upcoming movie will serve as a direct sequel to The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, potentially ignoring the events of the third film to allow Weisz to return as Evelyn O’Connell.
The announcement comes as The Mummy Returns celebrates its 25th anniversary with a limited theatrical re-release that began on March 27, 2026.
While plot details have not been revealed, the directors have described the film as “sweeping, scary, and beautiful,” aiming to capture the tone and character-driven storytelling that made the original 1999 film a success.
