Newly Released Evidence Details Circumstances Surrounding Anne Burrell’s Death

The New York Police Department has released new forensic photos and details related to the death of celebrity chef Anne Burrell, who died on June 17, 2025, at age 55. The information, made public in April 2026, provides a clearer picture of the scene in her Brooklyn apartment and the findings of the medical examiner.

According to investigators, the newly released images show dozens of pills scattered across the bathroom floor. A bowl containing various pills was found near the toilet, along with several empty and open medication bottles. These included common over-the-counter drugs such as Advil and Zyrtec. The scene also contained cigarette butts and a lighter.

Police reported that a handwritten suicide note and a personal diary were recovered. The writings reportedly described ongoing emotional distress and internal struggles.

The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Burrell’s death a suicide caused by acute intoxication. Toxicology results identified multiple substances in her system, including amphetamines, alcohol, diphenhydramine (an antihistamine found in Benadryl), and cetirizine (found in Zyrtec).

Authorities also outlined events leading up to her death. On the evening before she died, Burrell performed at an improv comedy show in Brooklyn. Surveillance footage from her apartment building shows her returning home with her husband, Stuart Claxton. Reports describe her demeanor in the video as distant.

Claxton discovered her unresponsive in the bathroom the following morning at approximately 7:40 a.m. He called emergency services, and paramedics attempted CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
