According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly, Kardashian was awarded about $167,000 in attorney fees after winning a legal dispute against Ivan Cantu. She had originally requested around $186,000.
The case began in February 2025 when Cantu sued Kardashian for defamation. He claimed she mistakenly posted his photo on social media while discussing another man with the same name — a Texas death row inmate convicted of murder in 2001.
A judge later dismissed Cantu’s lawsuit in November 2025. After the dismissal, Kardashian filed a motion asking the court to make Cantu pay her legal costs.
Cantu opposed the request, arguing that paying such a large amount would financially ruin him. He also said Kardashian, whose net worth is estimated at about $1 billion, did not need the money.
Despite those arguments, the judge ruled mostly in Kardashian’s favor and approved the payment.
The decision quickly sparked debate online, especially on Reddit, where many users described the move as “petty” and “greedy.”
Some commenters argued that although Kardashian won the case legally, her team still made the original mistake by posting the wrong person’s image. Others said the legal fees should not have been imposed because the incident may have harmed Cantu’s reputation and family.
One commenter wrote that Kardashian’s actions “leave a bad taste,” while another said she was “petty for doing that” despite her wealth.
The controversy stems from Kardashian’s social media post, in which she intended to share images of convicted murderer Ivan Cantu but accidentally used photos of another man with the same name.
