In recent interviews, O’Donnell described the film’s promotional tour as a difficult experience. He said the cast quickly realized that the movie was being poorly received, with critics openly dismissing it as reviews came out. Despite the negative reaction, the actors were expected to continue promoting the film, which he said created a disconnect between their professional responsibilities and the growing backlash.
O’Donnell also shared that director Joel Schumacher struggled with the criticism. According to him, Schumacher became deeply discouraged by the response and eventually withdrew from much of the promotional effort.
The actor also revealed a behind-the-scenes detail about filming. Although O’Donnell and Arnold Schwarzenegger were positioned as central rivals—Robin and Mr. Freeze—they rarely worked together on set. Due to Schwarzenegger’s high salary and limited shooting schedule, his scenes were filmed separately and efficiently. As a result, O’Donnell often performed his lines opposite stand-ins or empty space rather than directly with Schwarzenegger.
At the time of its release, Batman & Robin was widely criticized for its tone, with reviewers calling it overly campy and lacking substance. The film’s reception contributed to Warner Bros. pausing the Batman franchise for several years.
However, perspectives have shifted over time. Both O’Donnell and Silverstone say the film is now viewed more favorably by some audiences, who appreciate its exaggerated style and humor. Silverstone noted that it has developed a cult following, with fans embracing elements that were once criticized, including the film’s colorful design and intentionally over-the-top performances.
She also joked about the practical challenges of the costumes, including the much-discussed “bat-nipples,” saying they made everyday tasks during filming difficult.
