Lena Dunham Claims Volatile Behavior on Girls Set

Lena Dunham’s new memoir Famesick, released April 14, 2026, is already generating significant attention in Hollywood, largely because of a series of allegations about actor Adam Driver’s behavior during the filming of HBO’s Girls.

In the book, Dunham recounts several incidents that she describes as unsettling and, at times, physically intimidating. The most striking involves a rehearsal in which she says she was struggling to deliver her lines. Looking back, Dunham attributes that difficulty to dissociation linked to undiagnosed endometriosis.

According to her account, Driver became visibly frustrated during the scene. She writes that he shouted at her to “say something,” then threw a chair against a wall near where she was sitting. She also recalls him telling her to “wake up,” expressing anger at what he perceived as her disengagement.

Dunham frames the moment not just as an isolated outburst, but as part of a broader pattern of what she characterizes as volatile behavior. Elsewhere in Famesick, she alleges that Driver once punched a hole in a trailer wall after being unhappy with a haircut. She also describes discomfort during the filming of intimate scenes, claiming he sometimes disregarded planned choreography, leaving her feeling physically unsafe and concerned that the scenes were becoming overly aggressive.

The memoir also touches on their professional relationship after the show ended. Dunham writes that Driver told her, “I hope you know I’ll always love you,” when he wrapped his final scene in 2016, but says they have not spoken since.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Dunham reflected on why she did not address the behavior at the time, despite being the show’s creator and Driver’s employer. She said that in her twenties, she lacked the confidence to assert authority in those situations and had internalized the idea that difficult behavior was part of working with “great male geniuses.”

As of April 14, representatives for Adam Driver have not issued a public response. Multiple outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter and The Independent, report that requests for comment have been made.

Driver has long been known for his intense acting style, often associated with method techniques. While that reputation has generally been framed as dedication to craft, the claims in Famesick have prompted renewed discussion about the boundaries between artistic intensity and workplace safety.
