Lisa Kudrow Says She Was Treated as “the Sixth Friend” During Friends Era

Lisa Kudrow is speaking candidly about how she was perceived during her time on Friends, offering a more critical view of her experience at the height of the show’s success.

In an interview published April 4, 2026, by The Independent, Kudrow said she often felt overlooked within the industry, including by her own talent agency. She revealed that some departments at the agency referred to her dismissively as “the sixth Friend,” suggesting she was seen as less marketable than her co-stars.

Kudrow described a broader lack of belief in her career prospects at the time. “Nobody cared about me,” she said, adding that there was “no vision” for what she might do beyond the sitcom. She recalled that the prevailing attitude toward her success was that she had simply been fortunate to land the role.

That perception contrasted with her achievements on the show. Kudrow was the first member of the main cast to win an Emmy, receiving the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1998. Despite that recognition, she said industry interest in her did not significantly increase until after her performance in the 1999 film Analyze This.

In a separate interview with Interview Magazine, Kudrow also addressed how her character, Phoebe Buffay, has often been labeled. She rejected the idea that Phoebe was unintelligent, instead describing the character as someone who did not conform to social expectations. Kudrow said Phoebe’s personality was initially very different from her own, and that she read about spirituality to better understand and portray the character.

Kudrow has also recently begun rewatching Friends in full for the first time. Speaking on podcasts and late-night television, including Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and Jimmy Kimmel Live, she said the experience has been both comforting and reflective. She highlighted her late co-star Matthew Perry as “the funniest” and noted that revisiting the series has allowed her to appreciate her own performance after years of self-criticism.

These reflections come as Kudrow promotes the third and final season of her HBO Max series The Comeback, which premiered on March 22, 2026.
