Nicole Kidman Reveals How Her Mother’s Death Shaped Her New Path, Including Death Doula Training

Nicole Kidman has shared new details about the night she learned her mother had died, describing a sudden and overwhelming shift from celebration to grief.

Speaking at the HISTORYTalks event in Philadelphia on April 18, 2026, Kidman recalled being in Venice in September 2024 for the premiere of her film Babygirl. That evening, she had just been named Best Actress, winning the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival. As she prepared to go on stage, she received the news that her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had died at age 84.

Kidman said she immediately returned to her hotel room instead of attending the ceremony. She described lying in bed in shock, unsure how to process what had happened or how she would continue.

In the middle of the night, she tried to leave Venice to be with her family. She got into a boat to head toward the airport but turned back before completing the trip. She said she felt unable to continue in her emotional state.

Director Halina Reijn accepted the award on Kidman’s behalf. A statement from Kidman was read during the ceremony, saying, “The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”

At the Philadelphia event, Kidman spoke about her close relationship with her mother, calling her a “compass” and a “mentor.” She said her mother had encouraged her to continue acting during times when she considered stepping away from her career.

Kidman also reflected on what she learned from the experience. She said it reinforced her sense of resilience and her ability to endure difficult moments. She also shared advice from her mother: “Don’t ever let anyone break your spirit.”

In addition to reflecting on her personal loss, Kidman discussed recent professional developments. She appeared at CinemaCon earlier in the week alongside Sandra Bullock to promote Practical Magic 2, which is expected to be released later in 2026.

Kidman also revealed she is training to become a death doula, a role focused on supporting people at the end of life. She said this decision was influenced by her desire to offer care and comfort during difficult transitions.
