The departure is attributed primarily to scheduling conflicts. Production on the film is now locked to begin this summer in Los Angeles after securing a significant California tax credit. That incentive requires the project to adhere to a fixed shoot timeline, leaving little flexibility to accommodate Gosling’s availability.
Gosling’s schedule has become increasingly constrained. He is currently finishing a global promotional run for the sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, which has earned more than $300 million worldwide since its March 20 release. He also recently completed filming on Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, slated for release in May 2027. These overlapping commitments reportedly made it impossible to align with the Daniels’ production window.
Despite losing its lead actor, Universal Pictures is proceeding with the project. The studio has shifted the release date to November 19, 2027, moving it from its earlier June 2027 slot. The film is described as a sci-fi action comedy, though specific plot details have not been disclosed. It is expected to carry thematic elements similar to the Daniels’ previous work, blending genre storytelling with emotional and philosophical depth.
Casting is now underway to replace Gosling. Given the commercial and critical success of Everything Everywhere All at Once, the lead role is anticipated to attract significant interest within the industry.
Kwan and Scheinert are producing the film through their Playgrounds banner alongside longtime collaborator Jonathan Wang. In addition to their directing work, the duo recently produced the documentary The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, which was released in theaters on March 27.
