Don Lemon Says He Could Run for President, but Has No Immediate Plans

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon said he believes he could run for president, though he emphasized he is not currently planning a campaign. His comments came during an appearance on the Pod Save America podcast in late March 2026.

Speaking with guest host Alex Wagner, Lemon said, “I think I could be President of the United States. I could definitely run this country better than Donald Trump.” When asked directly whether he would consider entering a race, he responded, “Yes… It could happen if the opportunity presented itself.”

Lemon acknowledged that some people might view the idea as unrealistic, but he pointed to former President Barack Obama’s rise as an example of how unexpected candidates can succeed. He noted that Obama’s path to the presidency was initially doubted by many observers.

Despite the comments, Lemon made clear that he does not have an active intention to run. He said the demands of political life could be personally disruptive, adding that such a move might “ruin” his life.

Lemon is currently registered as an independent voter, though he indicated he would likely need to run as a Democrat to mount a viable campaign.

His remarks come during a period of legal and professional transition. Lemon is facing federal charges related to a protest earlier this year at Cities Church in Minnesota. Authorities allege he violated the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act during a demonstration connected to immigration enforcement. Lemon has pleaded not guilty.

Since his departure from CNN in 2023, Lemon has focused on building his independent media presence. His YouTube program, The Don Lemon Show, has grown to more than 1.25 million subscribers as of March 2026.

Reaction to Lemon’s comments has been mixed. Some conservative media figures have dismissed the idea of a presidential run, while others have treated it as speculative. Lemon has not announced any formal steps toward candidacy and said he would look for a broader signal from the public before making a decision.
