Earlier this year, the 25-year-old Supergirl and House of the Dragon star told Vanity Fair that working in large IP franchises made her realize “simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on.” She also said society has become “very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies.”
In a new interview with Variety, Alcock said many critics misunderstood her remarks.
“I didn’t even say ‘men’ — I said ‘people!’” Alcock said. “And they got so angry. I was like, ‘You’re proving my point.’”
She added that much of the backlash came from anonymous or burner social media accounts, joking that some critics described themselves online as “Dad of four, Christian.”
Alcock said she does not take those reactions seriously, adding, “If you’re pissing the right kind of people off, you’re doing OK.”
Alcock will next appear as Kara Zor-El in Supergirl alongside Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. The film is scheduled for release on June 26.
