Rob Schneider Calls for Return of U.S. Military Draft at Age 18

Actor and comedian Rob Schneider has sparked widespread debate after calling for the return of a mandatory U.S. military draft for all citizens at age 18.

Schneider made the comments amid rising geopolitical tensions and renewed public attention on U.S. military activity in the Middle East. Although he is known for his political opinions, his latest remarks focused on the idea of universal national service.

He argued that a draft applying to all Americans would ensure broader representation within the military. According to Schneider, if people from all social and economic backgrounds—including the families of political and business leaders—were required to serve, the government might be less likely to enter what he described as “pointless wars.”

He also suggested that shared service could help reduce political divisions in the United States by giving young people a common experience.

The timing of his comments has added to the reaction. Public concern about a possible draft has increased following statements from White House officials about potential military action involving Iran. While the administration has said a draft is not currently being considered, it has not fully ruled out the possibility of deploying ground forces, keeping the issue in public discussion.

At the same time, the U.S. military continues to face recruitment challenges. The Army recently raised its maximum enlistment age to 42 in an effort to boost numbers, leading some observers to question whether the all-volunteer system can meet long-term needs.

Schneider’s proposal has drawn strong criticism online. Many commenters have questioned his credibility, noting that he did not serve in the military himself. Others have challenged whether he would support drafting members of his own family under such a system.

Despite the renewed attention, there is currently no active military draft in the United States. The country has relied on an all-volunteer force since 1973. Reinstating the draft would require approval from Congress, which is widely seen as unlikely under current political conditions.

The Selective Service System remains in place, requiring men between the ages of 18 and 25 to register. However, this system functions as a standby measure and does not involve active conscription.
