Adam Scott Says He Knows How Severance Ends, Teases Surprise-Filled Season 3 as Cast Prepares to Return After Long Break

Actor Adam Scott says he already knows how the TV show Severance will end. As an executive producer, he works closely with creator Dan Erickson and the writers, so he is involved in the full story.

Scott said he is excited for Season 3. It has been more than two years since filming for Season 2 ended, and the cast is eager to return. Although Ben Stiller will not direct the new season, Scott said Stiller is still heavily involved.

Scott also spoke about how much he wanted the role of Mark in Severance. He said he had to prove he could handle the part, especially after being known mostly for comedy roles like Parks and Recreation. He actively looked for more serious work and even had to push hard to get cast in Big Little Lies.

He described Severance as a major turning point in his career. The role allowed him to explore different sides of a complex character in a unique and mysterious world.

One challenge was acting out the “transition” scenes, where his character switches between two identities. Scott said he and Ben Stiller practiced these scenes many times, even using a separate elevator set. They eventually developed small details, like subtle eye movements, to make the change feel believable.

The show has gained a strong fan following, with many viewers drawn to its mystery. Scott said he likes stories that don’t explain everything, comparing Severance to shows like Twin Peaks and The Sopranos, which leave room for interpretation.

Outside of Severance, Scott recently worked on a horror film called Hokum. He said a good horror movie should first be a strong story with interesting characters, and then add scary elements on top.

Scott believes Severance connected with audiences partly because it came out as people were adjusting to new work habits after the pandemic. The show explores the balance between work and personal life, and asks a key question: if you could separate the two completely, would you choose to do it?
