French Actress Nadia Farès Dies After Swimming Pool Incident in Paris

French actress Nadia Farès, known for her role in the thriller The Crimson Rivers (Les Rivières pourpres), has died at the age of 57. Her death was confirmed on April 17, 2026.

Farès was found unconscious on April 11 in a swimming pool at a private sports complex in Paris’s 9th arrondissement. A fellow swimmer pulled her from the water and performed CPR before emergency services arrived. She was taken to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where she was placed in an induced coma. She later suffered cardiac arrest and did not regain consciousness.

Authorities in France have opened an investigation into the incident. Early reports indicate there is no evidence of criminal activity or foul play.

Farès had spoken publicly about her health problems in recent years, describing them as serious and ongoing. In 2007, she underwent brain surgery after a cerebral aneurysm. More recently, she had three heart operations within four years.

She built a career in film and television spanning more than three decades. She gained international recognition in 2000 for her role as Fanny Ferreira in The Crimson Rivers, starring alongside Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel. Her other work included films such as The Nest (Nid de guêpes) and Storm Warning, as well as the Netflix series Marseille.

At the time of her death, Farès was preparing her first project as a director and screenwriter, an action-comedy film that was scheduled to begin production later this year.

In a statement released through Agence France-Presse, her daughters, Cylia and Shana, described her as a “great artist” and a “precious mother.”
