In an interview with the Associated Press, Nolan explained that while the movie is still large in scale, it will not be longer than his previous film Oppenheimer, which ran for about three hours. He described The Odyssey as “an epic film” but confirmed it will have a shorter runtime.
One reason for the limit is technical. The movie is the first Hollywood feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, and IMAX projectors can only handle films up to 180 minutes long.
The Odyssey is based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer. It tells the story of Odysseus and his long journey home after the Trojan War, which takes ten years.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus. Other cast members include Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, and Charlize Theron as Calypso.
Nolan said making The Dark Knight trilogy helped him prepare for this project. He emphasized that audiences expect a faithful and serious approach to well-known stories.
The director also said there is “a massive amount of pressure” because the story is so important to many people.
The Odyssey is set to be released in theaters on July 17.
