Winslet will play a character named Marigol, described as the film’s central female figure. The studio has not shared many details about the role, but early speculation suggests Marigol could be a new character created specifically for the story, similar to Tauriel in The Hobbit trilogy. That approach would give the filmmakers more flexibility within Tolkien’s established timeline.
The film is being directed by Andy Serkis, who also returns as Gollum. Serkis has long been associated with the character through both performance capture and voice work, and this project marks his most significant leadership role within the franchise.
Production is scheduled to take place in New Zealand from May through October 2026, continuing the series’ long-standing connection to the country’s landscapes. Winslet is reportedly planning to relocate with her family during the shoot, underscoring the scale and commitment involved.
Several familiar faces are expected to return. Ian McKellen will once again play Gandalf, and Elijah Wood is set to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins. Lee Pace will also return as Thranduil. At the same time, the film introduces notable changes and additions. Jamie Dornan has been cast as Aragorn, taking over the role from Viggo Mortensen, while Leo Woodall joins the cast as a new character named Halvard.
The story is set during the 17-year gap between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. It focuses on Gandalf and Aragorn’s efforts to track down Gollum before Sauron can learn the truth about the One Ring. This period has been referenced in Tolkien’s writings but has not been fully explored on screen, giving the filmmakers room to expand the narrative.
The project also reunites Winslet with producer Peter Jackson. The two previously worked together on Heavenly Creatures (1994), which marked Winslet’s breakthrough performance.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
