In a post to his roughly 60 million Instagram followers, DiCaprio called on people to contact members of the U.S. House of Representatives and ask them to vote against the ESA Amendments Act of 2025 (H.R. 1897). The bill, he said, would weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a law passed in 1973 to protect plants and animals at risk of extinction.
“Today, on Earth Day of all days, the U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote to gut the Endangered Species Act,” DiCaprio wrote. He argued that the proposed legislation would prioritize short-term economic interests over long-term environmental protection and could harm vulnerable species and ecosystems.
The Endangered Species Act, signed into law by President Richard Nixon, passed Congress with strong bipartisan support and has been a central tool in U.S. conservation efforts for more than 50 years.
DiCaprio encouraged followers to call their representatives through the U.S. Capitol switchboard and voice opposition to the bill. He described the issue as critical not only for wildlife but also for broader ecological systems that support human life.
The actor shared the message while working overseas on a new film, “What Happens at Night,” directed by Martin Scorsese. The project reunites DiCaprio with the director after several past collaborations and also stars Jennifer Lawrence.
Beyond his film career, DiCaprio is known for his environmental advocacy. He has frequently spoken about climate change and conservation issues and has used his platform to support environmental policies and political candidates aligned with those views.
During the 2024 U.S. presidential election, DiCaprio endorsed Kamala Harris and criticized President Donald Trump’s environmental record, particularly his stance on climate change and regulatory rollbacks.
DiCaprio continues to use public moments such as Earth Day to draw attention to environmental issues and encourage civic engagement on related policies.
