In an interview on CBS Mornings on March 31, 2026, Stone said modern portrayals of intimacy are frequently “blatant” and “harsh,” adding that they leave little to the imagination. According to Stone, this approach removes what she considers a key element of sexuality on screen: tension and suggestion.
“For me, it steals from my own imagination,” she said. “I prefer my yearning, mystery, desire. I want to keep that alive inside myself.”
Stone, who became widely known for her role in the 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct, pointed to the film’s famous interrogation scene as an example of a more subtle approach. She noted that the moment was brief and not explicitly shown in full, but became culturally significant because of the intrigue it generated rather than graphic detail.
Her comments come as she promotes her upcoming role in Season 3 of HBO’s Euphoria, set to premiere April 12, 2026. The series is known for its explicit content and portrayal of teenage life. Despite her criticism of modern sex scenes, Stone defended the show, describing it as reflective of current realities and saying it is something parents should watch to better understand the world young people are navigating.
At the same time, she acknowledged a personal contradiction. While she supports Euphoria as a form of social commentary, she said she still chooses to fast-forward through scenes she finds too explicit.
Stone also reflected on the long-term impact of her role in Basic Instinct. She said she faced harsh public judgment after the film’s release, which she believes contributed to her losing custody of her son.
“I played a character 30 years ago. Grow up,” she said.
