The 61-year-old actor spoke to PEOPLE on April 21 while attending the opening night of The Balusters on Broadway. She was there to support her former Desperate Housewives co-star Ricardo Chavira, who is making his Broadway debut.
Hatcher recalled that in 1999 she performed as Sally Bowles in a touring production of Cabaret, directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall. The tour ran for seven months across four cities and co-starred Norbert Leo Butz.
“It was an amazing experience,” Hatcher said. At the end of the tour, she was invited to bring the role to Broadway but declined.
At the time, Hatcher said she had a young child and felt exhausted after months on the road. “I’d already done it for seven months,” she explained. Looking back, she now sees that moment as her chance to appear on Broadway.
Despite that decision, Hatcher said she hopes to get another opportunity in the future.
The Cabaret revival she referenced opened on Broadway in 1998 and starred Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, both of whom won Tony Awards for their performances.
While reflecting on her own career, Hatcher attended The Balusters to support Chavira, who is making his Broadway debut at age 54. She called his achievement “really amazing.”
Hatcher said that although Desperate Housewives ended years ago, she values staying in touch with her former castmates. Fellow alum Mark Moses also attended the event.
The Balusters, written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon, is a comedy about a neighborhood association locked in disputes over minor issues such as trash rules and street signs.
