Adam McKay Says Democrats Rely on ‘Manipulative Marketing’

Filmmaker Adam McKay criticized the Democratic Party and “white liberals” during a recent appearance on the “Urgent Futures” podcast, continuing his public break from the party after the 2024 presidential election.

McKay, best known for directing films such as “Step Brothers,” “The Big Short,” and “Don’t Look Up,” said he no longer believes Democrats are effectively serving voters. During the podcast, he accused party leaders of failing to hold President Donald Trump accountable and criticized what he described as political and media manipulation.

“It is incredible to watch people this far down the road still say you gotta stand behind the Democrat Party,” McKay said. He also claimed Democrats rely on “manipulative marketing” and argued that wealthy white liberals benefit from the current political and economic system.

McKay announced in November 2024 that he was leaving the Democratic Party after Trump won a second term in the White House. At the time, he wrote on X that he planned to register with either the Green Party or the Working Families Party.

He also criticized Democrats over several issues, including President Joe Biden’s health, healthcare policy, climate policy, support for fracking, and U.S. policy toward the war in Gaza.

On the podcast, McKay said one of his biggest criticisms of Democrats is their support for the private healthcare system. He argued that many affluent liberals are disconnected from the struggles faced by ordinary Americans.

McKay has become increasingly political in recent years, especially on issues related to climate change, economic inequality, and corporate influence in politics.
