Britney Spears May Avoid Jail in DUI Case

Britney Spears may be able to avoid jail time after being charged in a DUI case in California.

Prosecutors in Ventura County filed a misdemeanor charge against the 44-year-old singer on April 30, a few days before her scheduled court appearance. Officials say Spears will likely be offered a deal known as a “wet reckless.”

A wet reckless is a lesser charge than DUI. It allows someone to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs. In this type of case, the person is usually placed on probation for 12 months, must take a DUI education class, and pay fines. Jail time is typically avoided.

Officials said this outcome is common, especially when the person has no prior DUI record, caused no crash or injuries, and had a relatively low blood alcohol level. Spears meets those conditions. Authorities also noted that seeking treatment can help in such cases.

Earlier this month, Spears voluntarily entered a treatment facility. According to a source, her two sons encouraged her to get help and focus on her health.

Spears was arrested on March 4 after police received reports that her car was being driven erratically at high speed. Officers said she showed signs of impairment during a traffic stop and was arrested after field sobriety tests. She was released the next morning.

Her arraignment is scheduled for May 4. Because the charge is a misdemeanor, she does not have to appear in person and can be represented by her attorney.
