Trump had publicly called for Kimmel to be fired after the host made a joke about Melania Trump, suggesting she looked like “an expectant widow.” Trump posted on Truth Social, saying Kimmel was “unfunny” and that his show had low ratings, although the show continues to perform well.

When Streep came on stage, she asked Kimmel how he was doing, referring to the situation. Kimmel responded that he was “holding up.” Streep praised him, calling him a supporter of press freedom and saying that people around the world are paying attention to his work.

Kimmel responded modestly, saying he is just trying to tell jokes. Streep added that many people rely on voices like his.

Streep has previously portrayed Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham in the film “The Post,” which focused on the importance of a free press during the release of the Pentagon Papers.
