Jamie Dornan to Play Aragorn in New Lord of the Rings Film, Viggo Mortensen Gives Support

Andy Serkis has confirmed that Jamie Dornan will take over the role of Aragorn in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and says original star Viggo Mortensen supports the decision.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Serkis said both he and the production team are “thrilled” to have Dornan join the cast. He also made clear that Mortensen has given his approval, calling it “100 percent.”

Mortensen, who played Aragorn in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, had previously said he would only return if the role suited his current age and the story. Since details of the new film did not align with that, he is not reprising the character.

Serkis, who is directing the film and will return as Gollum, kept most story details secret. However, he confirmed that filming will begin soon.

The movie will include both returning and new actors. Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), and Lee Pace (Thranduil) are set to appear again. New cast members include Jamie Dornan, Leo Woodall, and Kate Winslet.

Serkis said the film will focus closely on Gollum, exploring the character in more depth. He described it as a smaller, more personal story compared to previous films, set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

He added that there is still a lot to explore in Gollum’s story and that the new film aims to bring audiences back into Middle-earth in a meaningful way.
