Victoria Beckham Says Netflix Series Felt Like “A Year of Therapy”

Victoria Beckham is opening up about what it was like filming her Netflix documentary series, Victoria Beckham.

Speaking at the Time100 Summit in New York City last month, the fashion designer and former Spice Girl said she enjoyed letting cameras follow her life behind the scenes, even though it meant giving up some control.

“To be honest, I quite enjoyed the process,” Beckham said during an interview with Time editorial director Lucy Feldman. “I went into the process a control freak and came out a reformed control freak because I didn't have that much control.”

The three-part Netflix series premiered in October and gave viewers a closer look at Beckham’s fashion business and personal life. In an earlier interview with Elle, she said the show addressed difficult moments in her career, including struggles with her company.

“There were rumors at the beginning — was this a vanity project, was my husband bailing me out?” Beckham said. “That wasn't opinion. That was fact. My business was struggling.”

She said making the documentary forced her to become more open and vulnerable than ever before.

At the summit, Beckham described the experience as emotional and compared it to therapy.

“It was like a year's intense therapy,” she said. “I always live in the present and look forward, so looking back was new for me.”

Beckham also reflected on the challenges she has faced throughout her life and career.

“I realized that I've spent most of my life being told no, being told that I'm not good enough,” she said. “Every time I've been knocked, I've got back up again.”

She added that she now feels proud of herself and her achievements.

Elsewhere in the discussion, Beckham talked about dealing with public attention alongside her husband, former soccer star David Beckham, who was also featured in the 2023 Netflix documentary Beckham.

“This has been happening since I was 20,” she said. “I have an incredible husband who supports me enormously. We're always there for each other. I learned a long time ago not to focus on the noise.”

Victoria and David Beckham share four children: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. In recent years, media attention has also focused on reported tensions within the family involving their eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, and his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham.
