Steven Spielberg Warns Against AI Replacing Human Creativity in Filmmaking

Steven Spielberg criticized the growing use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking during an appearance on Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson’s “IMO” podcast. The Oscar-winning director said AI can be useful for practical tasks, such as helping with medical research or reducing production work like location scouting, but he does not want it replacing human creativity in movies.

Spielberg said AI should never take the place of writers, directors, or production designers. He argued that creativity comes from the “soul” and cannot be reproduced by algorithms. He added that he does not believe computers can truly feel emotions or understand human experience.

“Use AI as a tool, but do not use AI as the final word on anything creative,” Spielberg said.

The director also rejected the idea of AI making artistic decisions, including writing dialogue, choosing camera angles, or designing sets.

Spielberg joins other Hollywood figures who have expressed concern about AI in entertainment. Leonardo DiCaprio recently said AI-generated content lacks humanity and cannot be considered authentic art, even when it appears impressive or technically advanced.
