Andrew Garfield Praises ‘Harry Potter’ Films but Avoids Naming J.K. Rowling Amid Ongoing Debate

Andrew Garfield is making headlines after revealing he only recently watched the Harry Potter film series for the first time—and had mixed feelings about supporting the franchise.

In a March 27, 2026 interview with Hits Radio, Garfield said he was “very late to the game,” having just finished all eight films. Despite the delay, he spoke highly of the movies, praising their emotional depth and craftsmanship.

He singled out Daniel Radcliffe for his performance as Harry Potter, calling him “so goddamn good” and commending the overall “soul and spirit” of the films.

However, Garfield also made it clear he has reservations about the franchise’s creator, J.K. Rowling. During the interview, he avoided saying her name, instead referring to her as “she that shall remain nameless”—a reference to the Harry Potter villain Lord Voldemort, also known as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.”

Garfield explained that his hesitation comes from ongoing controversies surrounding Rowling’s views on transgender issues. He said he is concerned about supporting projects that could financially benefit causes he disagrees with, adding that “we shouldn’t be putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now.”

His comments come at a time when the Harry Potter brand is back in the spotlight. A new TV adaptation from HBO is in development, with a first trailer recently released and a planned debut expected in the 2025–2026 window.

The reboot has already sparked renewed debate about whether audiences can separate art from the artist. Casting decisions have also drawn attention, including reports that John Lithgow was considered for the role of Albus Dumbledore and nearly stepped away due to backlash tied to Rowling’s involvement.

Garfield has long been a popular fan choice to play Remus Lupin in future adaptations, but his recent remarks suggest he may be distancing himself from the franchise, even as he expresses admiration for the original films.
