BTS Fans Slam ‘Tonight Show’ After Controversial Joke Sparks Backlash

A controversy has erupted around The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon after a joke about North Korea drew sharp criticism from fans of BTS.

The incident took place during a taping on March 25, 2026, as the group prepared for a highly anticipated appearance to promote their new album ARIRANG. Before filming began, warm-up comedian Seth Herzog was engaging with the audience when he reportedly asked, “Is there anyone here from the North? No? Nobody?”

The comment was met with a noticeably uncomfortable reaction in the studio. Many fans later took to social media, calling the remark insensitive and xenophobic. Critics argued that referencing North Korea in this context reduced South Korean artists to a political stereotype and ignored the cultural and historical complexities of the Korean peninsula.

Reports from outlets including TMZ and The Korea Times say Herzog apologized directly to BTS after the backlash began to build. Behind the scenes, NBC executives reportedly issued him a stern warning and discussed steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite the controversy, BTS continued with their scheduled two-day appearance on the show, performing music from ARIRANG. One of the performances was filmed at the Guggenheim Museum, adding to the scale of their promotional rollout.

However, many fans—known collectively as ARMY—say the apology was not enough. Online, hashtags calling for accountability began trending, with fans demanding a formal, on-air apology rather than a private one.

Some attendees also raised concerns about how the taping was handled. Fans claimed they were kept waiting for more than five hours, had their phones taken away, and in some cases were moved to separate rooms to watch the performance on screens instead of seeing it live.

The situation has also reignited a broader conversation about how Asian artists are treated in Western media. Fans pointed out that BTS leader RM has previously spoken about the frustration of being asked questions like “North or South?” even after the group’s global success.

As the backlash continues, neither NBC nor the show has issued a public statement addressing the incident directly.
