Dakota Johnson Says She Lost Role After Being Labeled “Cocky” in Audition

Dakota Johnson has shared an unusual story about a failed audition, offering a glimpse into the unpredictable nature of casting decisions in Hollywood.

Speaking on Hits Radio while promoting her new film Splitsville, Johnson recalled a callback audition where her attempt to be polite may have cost her the role. According to Johnson, she entered the room and introduced herself to each member of the creative team, shaking hands before beginning her performance. She said her intention was simply to be courteous and professional.

However, the response she received afterward focused not on her acting, but on her behavior. Johnson said she was told that her approach came across as “pompous” and “cocky.” The casting team reportedly interpreted her introductions as “schmoozing,” suggesting she was trying to win favor rather than rely on her performance.

As a result, she did not get the part. Johnson said she was surprised by the feedback, describing the situation as “pretty crazy” and noting that she had only been trying to show good manners.

The anecdote has since gained attention online, with many pointing to it as an example of how subjective and inconsistent casting processes can be.

Johnson is currently promoting Splitsville, a dark comedy directed by Michael Angelo Covino. The film explores the complicated relationships between two couples—one going through a divorce and the other navigating an open marriage. Johnson stars in the film and also produced it through her company, TeaTime Pictures. The cast includes Adria Arjona and Nicholas Braun.
