On March 30, 2026, Wade—whose legal name is Maren Flagg—filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The complaint alleges that Swift’s 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl infringes on Wade’s long-established brand, Confessions of a Showgirl.
Wade says she has used her brand since 2014, beginning with a column in Las Vegas Weekly. It later expanded into a stage show, podcast, and book. She secured a federal trademark for the name in 2015.
The lawsuit centers on a legal concept known as “reverse confusion.” In such cases, a smaller or lesser-known brand argues that a much larger entity has overwhelmed the market with similar branding, leading the public to mistakenly believe the original creator is copying the larger one. Wade claims Swift’s global reach and extensive marketing have overshadowed her work and weakened her brand identity.
According to the complaint, Swift’s team—through TAS Rights Management—applied in late 2025 to trademark The Life of a Showgirl. Wade alleges that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office initially rejected or suspended the application, citing a likelihood of confusion with her existing trademark. The agency reportedly pointed to similarities in phrasing and overall commercial impression.
Wade argues this amounted to “actual notice,” meaning Swift’s team was aware of the potential conflict but continued using the branding.
The lawsuit names Swift, TAS Rights Management, Universal Music Group, and Bravado (UMG’s merchandise division) as defendants. Wade is seeking a court order to stop further use of the album’s branding, along with profits from related sales, additional damages, and legal fees.
As of March 31, Swift and her representatives have not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
The dispute has also drawn attention online. Some observers have noted that Wade previously used Swift’s music and hashtags on social media during the album’s release period. Legal analysts suggest this could factor into the defense, potentially undermining claims of harm if Wade appeared to benefit from the association at the time.
The case is in its early stages, and a formal response from Swift’s legal team is expected in the coming weeks.
