The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. while Charvet was driving his pickup truck through the neighborhood. The dog, an 11-year-old white English Labrador named Sunday, was being walked by its owner, Vera Errico, along with two other dogs. After being struck, Sunday was taken to a veterinarian but was euthanized due to severe injuries.
Initial reports included conflicting accounts of what happened. Errico told TMZ that all three dogs were on leashes and alleged that Charvet hit the dog and left the scene without stopping. Charvet, through a representative, said the dogs were off-leash and in the middle of the street in low-light conditions. He stated that he slowed down and attempted to avoid them, but the dog moved under his vehicle. He also said he stopped immediately and called 911.
The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department investigated the incident and, as of Friday, April 17, said Charvet would not face criminal charges. Authorities confirmed that he contacted emergency services shortly after the collision, meaning the case does not qualify as a hit-and-run.
Law enforcement officials described the incident as a traffic collision and said the evidence supports the conclusion that it was an accident. Charvet’s representatives issued a statement expressing sympathy for the dog’s owner and describing him as a responsible pet owner.
No further action is expected from authorities.
