Elizabeth Banks Calls Elle Fanning “Perfect Casting” for Effie Trinket Prequel Role

Elizabeth Banks has voiced strong support for Elle Fanning stepping into the role of a younger Effie Trinket in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping.

Speaking to Variety at the April 6, 2026 premiere of her Peacock series The Miniature Wife, Banks described Fanning as “perfect casting.” She said she had long felt Fanning was a natural fit for the character and expressed excitement that the widely discussed fan casting has now become official.

The comments come shortly after the release of the film’s first teaser, which offered audiences an initial look at the younger version of Effie Trinket. Banks originally portrayed the character across all four films in the original Hunger Games series, beginning in 2012.

Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before the events of the original trilogy and centers on the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. In this story, Effie serves as the stylist for a young Haymitch Abernathy.

The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously helmed several installments of the franchise. Joseph Zada stars as young Haymitch, alongside a supporting cast that includes Elle Fanning, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow.

The movie is based on Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel of the same name and is scheduled for theatrical release on November 20, 2026.

Banks has remained publicly supportive of the franchise’s continued expansion and the introduction of a new generation of actors to its central roles.
