Halle Bailey Says ‘Little Mermaid’ Backlash Helped Her Grow

Halle Bailey says the backlash she faced after being cast as Ariel in Disney’s 2023 live-action The Little Mermaid helped her grow and gain perspective.

In recent interviews with The Independent and The Guardian, the 26-year-old actor and singer reflected on the racist criticism and online campaigns, including the hashtag #NotMyAriel, that followed her casting. Bailey said the experience, while difficult, ultimately pushed her to develop a stronger sense of self.

She described the period as “freeing,” explaining that it taught her to ignore negativity and focus on her inner voice. Bailey called the role a “beautiful” experience despite the controversy, saying it helped her learn to “listen to the good voices inside.”

To explain how she processed the intense public reaction, Bailey used what she called a “cup” analogy. She said it felt like watching herself from a distance, seeing people express completely opposite opinions. That contrast, she said, made her realize that public perception is often disconnected from reality and helped her stay grounded.

Bailey also linked the experience to her personal development. She said facing that level of scrutiny at 19 contributed to her transition into adulthood, describing it as part of “stepping into my womanhood.”

Now, Bailey is focusing on new work, including her upcoming romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany, in which she stars alongside Regé-Jean Page. She said the role feels different from her earlier work because it allows her to portray a more mature version of herself.

She also emphasized the importance of representation in her career choices. Bailey said she wants her work to reflect Black experiences and provide visibility for young Black girls and women. She added that she feels honored to be part of that effort.

Bailey noted that support from other actors who have faced similar backlash has been important. She mentioned Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White in Disney’s upcoming remake, and John Boyega, who starred in Star Wars, saying they have connected and supported each other.

When it comes to fame, Bailey said she tries to keep things in perspective by spending time in nature. She explained that feeling “small” helps her remember that her career is not the most important part of life. Instead, she said, what matters most is staying grounded and maintaining close relationships with loved ones.
