In an Instagram story posted Thursday, the actor explained that season 5, episode 4 was one of the most important episodes she has worked on. However, filming took place at a time when her health was rapidly declining.
Moriarty said she had begun experiencing numbness in her feet, which caused frequent falls. The night before shooting her scenes, she fell and badly injured her knee.
“Not long after this episode, I started to lose the ability to walk,” she wrote. “The numbness in my feet led to a lot of falling. The night before we shot my segment of this episode, I fell and shredded up my knee.”
Because of her condition, she added that she has very few behind-the-scenes photos from the season.
Moriarty emphasized that her post was not meant to gain sympathy, but to raise awareness about autoimmune diseases and the lack of understanding around them.
“This isn’t a pity post,” she wrote. “It’s mostly to say: f--- autoimmune disease… and the ignorance surrounding it.”
The actor first revealed in June 2025 that she had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid to produce too much hormone, leading to hyperthyroidism. Symptoms can include tremors, weight loss, fatigue, sleep problems, and eye or skin issues. While there is no cure, the condition can be managed with treatment.
Moriarty said that once she began treatment, her condition improved quickly.
“Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on,” she said, adding that she has been regaining strength since.
The episode she referenced, titled “King of Hell,” features her character Annie January confronting her estranged father. The storyline ends with a reconciliation, marking one of the more emotional moments of the season.
