George Clooney calls for unity and condemns violence in award speech

George Clooney used a major award speech to talk about politics and recent violence in the United States.

The actor was honored at the 51st annual Chaplin Award ceremony hosted by Film at Lincoln Center. While accepting the award, Clooney said he could not ignore current events.

He referred to a recent incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where a gunman reportedly tried to enter the event. Clooney said there is no place for violence, regardless of political beliefs. He also mentioned other violent incidents and called for unity.

Clooney, who has often criticized President Donald Trump, did not name him directly but spoke about what he described as rising hatred, corruption, and extremism. He said Americans must work together to “build a more perfect union” and reduce division.

The event included appearances from actors and entertainers such as Sam Rockwell, Stephen Colbert, Julianna Margulies, and John Turturro.

Clooney was recognized for his long career in film and television, including roles in “ER,” “Syriana,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” and the “Ocean’s” movies. He has also worked on stage and is known for his humanitarian efforts.

In his speech, Clooney quoted journalist Edward R. Murrow, saying people should not live in fear or be driven by it.

The Chaplin Award is given each year to honor major contributions to film.
