Hill, now 42, said during a live recording of the Smartless podcast that Russell’s behavior on set was intense at the time. He recalled that the director often yelled at people, including actress Lily Tomlin. Hill noted that Russell’s outbursts are already well known, referencing a video that surfaced years ago showing a heated argument between Russell and Tomlin during filming.
Despite this, Hill said he still considers Russell a talented director and a good person overall. He explained that Russell was going through a difficult period back then and added that everyone has challenging moments in their lives.
Hill also described the set as full of conflict, saying that arguments were common. He remembered seeing Russell and a production designer joking around, which suddenly turned into a real fight, right before Hill was about to film his first scene.
The conflict between Russell and Tomlin later became widely known after footage of their argument was leaked online. In a 2015 interview, Tomlin said she endured the situation quietly at the time but that she and Russell eventually made peace.
Russell has also spoken about the incident in past interviews. He said the experience was painful but helped him grow as a filmmaker. He also said that, aside from that incident, the atmosphere on set felt positive to him.
I Heart Huckabees is a comedy about two detectives who investigate unusual coincidences in people’s lives. The film features a cast that includes Lily Tomlin, Dustin Hoffman, Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, and Jason Schwartzman.
