Sally Field Says She Has No Regrets About Turning Down The First Wives Club

Sally Field says she is glad she turned down a role in The First Wives Club, the 1996 comedy starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton.

In an interview with Parade, Field explained that the story did not appeal to her. She said she has never liked how older women are often shown in movies as mainly focused on dating or sex. Field believes there are more meaningful stories to tell about women, so the role was “never my cup of tea.”

The film follows three divorced women who reunite and plan revenge on their ex-husbands, who left them for younger partners. Field was originally offered the role of Annie, a nervous housewife whose husband is having an affair. After she declined, Diane Keaton took the part.

Field said Keaton was the right choice and would have done a better job. She also mentioned another reason she felt unsuited for the role: the film ends with a musical performance, and she does not sing.

Despite turning it down, Field said she admires her former co-stars and holds no regrets about her decision.
