Speaking on a recent episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, hosted by Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco, the 37-year-old singer said she did not lose her virginity until after her major breakthrough at the 2020 Grammy Awards.
Lizzo explained that as a teenager, she made a personal promise to herself to wait until she won a Grammy before having sex. After winning three awards in 2020, including Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts,” she decided to follow through on that commitment. She clarified that this did not happen on the night of the ceremony, but sometime afterward.
The singer also acknowledged that she had kept this part of her life private for years due to embarrassment. She admitted that she sometimes lied about her sexual history to fit in with peers, recalling an instance when she felt pressured to make up a story during a conversation with friends.
In addition, Lizzo shared that her first kiss did not happen until she was 21, describing the experience as “terrible.”
She attributed some of her delayed experiences to her religious upbringing. As a teenager, she and her church friends made a pact to wait until marriage, which she said contributed to feelings of fear and uncertainty around intimacy.
Lizzo described speaking openly about her past as a relief, saying it felt like “a weight off her chest.” She added that being honest about her experiences was more important than maintaining an image that others might expect.
