In a statement posted on social media March 31, Woods acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and said he is focusing on his health. He stated that taking time away is necessary to prioritize his well-being and work toward recovery, adding that he hopes to return “healthier, stronger, and more focused.” He also asked for privacy for his family.
The announcement means Woods will miss the 2026 Masters Tournament, scheduled to begin April 9.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m. on March 27 on Jupiter Island. According to a police report, Woods was driving a Land Rover when it clipped a trailer being towed by a pickup truck. The vehicle rolled onto its side, and Woods exited through the passenger-side door. No injuries were reported.
Woods told deputies he had been looking down at his phone and adjusting the radio and did not notice that the vehicle ahead had slowed down.
Officers at the scene reported that Woods appeared to be sweating heavily and behaving sluggishly. They noted he was limping and stumbling, with bloodshot, glassy eyes and very dilated pupils.
A breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in his system. However, Woods refused to take a urine test. Deputies reported finding two hydrocodone pills, a prescription opioid, in his pocket. Woods told officers he takes prescription medications related to past back and leg surgeries.
Woods has been charged with misdemeanor DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He has pleaded not guilty, waived his arraignment, and requested a jury trial.
His next court appearance is scheduled for April 23 in Stuart, Florida. He is being represented by attorney Douglas Duncan, who also handled his 2017 DUI case.
