Scream 8 Moves Forward With New Writers After Scream 7 Success

Spyglass Media Group is moving forward with Scream 8 following the strong box office performance of Scream 7, but the next installment will come with notable creative changes.

The studio has hired sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman to write the screenplay. The pair are best known as showrunners of Peacock’s Poker Face and have also worked on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fringe, and Prodigal Son. Their hiring comes shortly after their planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, New Sunnydale, was canceled by Hulu despite having completed a pilot episode.

Kevin Williamson, the original writer of Scream and a key figure in the franchise, will not return to direct the eighth film. He recently directed and co-wrote Scream 7, released in February 2026. Williamson has said he plans to focus on original projects but will remain loosely involved with the franchise in a supportive capacity.

Casting has not been finalized. However, there is strong speculation that Neve Campbell could return as Sidney Prescott after playing a central role in the previous film. Discussions are also ongoing about bringing back other surviving characters, including those played by Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding.

One major question surrounding the new film is whether it will continue the storyline involving Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard, whose unexpected return in Scream 7 generated significant fan interest.

The script is currently in development, and Spyglass is reportedly aiming to move quickly into production. A release in late 2026 or early 2027 is being considered as the studio looks to maintain the franchise’s momentum.
