In the new season, Culkin appears in a flashback scene tied to Song’s character, Ally, and Kate Hudson’s character, Isla. The scene reveals the two were once college roommates who initially did not get along. They eventually bond while watching the 1991 film “My Girl,” which starred Culkin as Thomas J., a character who dies after an allergic reaction to bee stings.
The flashback references one of the film’s most emotional moments, in which Anna Chlumsky’s character mourns Thomas J. during an open-casket scene. In “Running Point,” Ally and Isla are shown crying together over the movie, marking a turning point in their relationship.
Song told Variety that the show’s writers came up with the meta cameo, though Culkin’s approval came just before the deadline. “He just signed off on it two days ago,” she said, noting the show was about to premiere.
She also said Culkin has repeatedly suggested appearing on the show. “He pitches himself every season,” Song said, adding that she tries to keep the focus on her work while still appreciating his interest.
Culkin’s earlier cameo in season 1 began as a background joke but expanded into a speaking role. In that appearance, he played a fan at a Los Angeles Waves game who complains about not seeing singer Billie Eilish.
“Running Point” season 2 is now streaming on Netflix, alongside the first season.
