Sterling K. Brown Calls Achilles Injury a ‘Blessing in Disguise’ for Family Time

Sterling K. Brown says a recent Achilles tendon injury turned into an unexpected positive, giving him months of time with his two sons.

Speaking at a fireside chat in New York City with Shipt CMO Alia Kemet, the 50-year-old actor described the injury as a “blessing in disguise.” Brown said the recovery period allowed him to focus on his family, particularly his sons Andrew, 14, and Amaré, 10, whom he shares with his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe.

“For me, right now, the center of my life are these two boys,” Brown said. He explained that the injury forced him to slow down for five to seven months, during which he attended his sons’ sports activities, including soccer, basketball, and flag football.

“I got a chance to spend a good five, six, seven months just going to every game and practice,” he said. “It was the most fulfilling sort of injury that I’ve ever had because I took advantage of that time.”

Brown first revealed the injury in September, saying he tore his Achilles tendon while doing a routine athletic activity. He recalled feeling as if someone had stepped on the back of his heel, only to realize no one was there.

Later that month, he appeared at the Emmy Awards wearing a cast on his left foot and used a knee scooter while presenting an award alongside his “Paradise” co-stars.

In addition to attending sports events, Brown said he values simple daily routines, such as driving his sons to school. He noted that these moments often lead to meaningful conversations.

“They’ll just start talking, and you just sit and listen,” he said. “It’s the best.”

Brown also shared a lighter moment, discussing his younger son’s interest in Tech Decks, miniature finger skateboards. While he admitted he does not fully understand the hobby, he said he enjoys watching his son’s enthusiasm.

Brown is currently serving as Shipt’s 2026 Chief Storyteller.
