A video shared by Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times showed the actor standing in traffic and arguing with a man on a bicycle on May 5. The cyclist accused Cumberbatch of riding through several red lights.
“I didn’t,” Cumberbatch said in the video. “Once, and I admitted to it.”
The cyclist replied by calling the actor “deluded” and accused him of lying. The two continued arguing as a crowd gathered nearby to watch.
At one point, Cumberbatch told the man, “Dude, you verbally abused me.” The cyclist answered sarcastically, saying he had done so because the actor had “completely and repeatedly broke the law.”
According to an eyewitness who spoke to Page Six, the argument lasted about 10 minutes.
“It was crazy,” the witness said. “It almost felt like it had been staged.”
After the cyclist left, Cumberbatch stayed behind and posed for photos with fans, the witness added.
The incident did not appear to affect the actor’s public schedule. On May 8, he attended David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth event at London’s Royal Albert Hall with his wife, Sophie Hunter.
On May 11, Cumberbatch also attended the 50th anniversary celebration of The King’s Trust, where he met King Charles.
