FKA Twigs to Play Josephine Baker in New Biopic

Singer, dancer, and actress FKA Twigs will star as legendary entertainer and activist Josephine Baker in a new movie about Baker’s life. The film does not yet have a title.

This will be Twigs’ first leading acting role. She has previously appeared in films including Mother Mary and The Crow. The movie will be directed by French filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré, known for the 2020 film Cuties.

In a statement, Twigs said she is inspired by Baker’s life and legacy. She said Baker was a groundbreaking woman whose story remains important today. Twigs added that she is excited to portray Baker’s struggles, talent, and courage on screen.

Director Maïmouna Doucouré said she wants the film to show Baker as a complex and fearless woman. She said the movie will explore Baker’s personal challenges as well as her fight for justice and equality.

The film is being produced by StudioCanal and Bien ou Bien Productions. StudioCanal plans to begin international sales at the Cannes Film Festival and release the movie in several countries, including the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand.

Two of Baker’s children, Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker, are helping support the project. Filming is expected to begin this fall.

Josephine Baker was born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis in 1906. She became one of the first Black women to star in a film, appearing in the 1927 silent movie Siren of the Tropics. Baker later moved to France, where she became a famous dancer and singer.

During World War II, Baker worked with the French Resistance against Nazi Germany. For her service, she received one of France’s highest honors, the Legion of Honour.

FKA Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett, began her career as a backup dancer before becoming a successful musician and performer. She is known for her creative music videos and live performances.
