At a court hearing in Ventura County on Monday, her lawyer entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor known as “wet reckless,” which involves driving with alcohol or drugs but is less serious than a full DUI charge. The agreement allowed Spears to avoid jail time.
Prosecutors offered the deal because she has no prior DUI record, her blood alcohol level was low, and the incident did not involve a crash or injuries. The case began after a traffic stop and arrest on March 4.
Under the terms of the agreement, Spears will be on probation for 12 months. She must also complete a three-month substance abuse program and pay a $571 fine. She was given a one-day jail sentence but received credit for time already served.
A spokesperson for Spears previously called the incident “inexcusable” and said she would follow the law and seek help. In April, her team confirmed that she had voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program.
Spears has not publicly commented on the case. However, she shared a message on social media thanking fans for their support and saying she was spending time with family and friends.
