In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump called the departing artists “overpriced singers” and complained that they often criticize him. He compared the event to the Kennedy Center, which he described as struggling.
The Freedom 250 organization is planning a June 24 event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as part of celebrations for America’s 250th birthday. Trump is expected to host the opening ceremony.
Several performers, including The Commodores, Martina McBride, Morris Day and the Time, Bret Michaels, and Young MC, have withdrawn. They said they believed the event would be nonpartisan but later felt it was politically connected. Freedom 250 was launched by Trump and is led by former State Department official Keith Krach.
Despite the withdrawals, Flo Rida, Vanilla Ice, and Freedom Williams are still scheduled to perform if the event goes ahead.
Trump also criticized a federal judge who recently blocked changes to the Kennedy Center and ordered his name removed from the venue. Trump called the judge biased and said the Kennedy Center is in decline.
