Speaking to Page Six, McCarthy said, “I would love to have made out with Liza Minnelli, but we did not.”
The claim originated in Gilbert’s 2010 memoir Prairie Tale, where she recounted a night out with then-boyfriend Rob Lowe, McCarthy, and talent agent Michael Black. According to Gilbert, the group dined at Spago before being joined by Minnelli and Michael Jackson, then continued the evening at Sammy Davis Jr.’s home and later Black’s apartment.
McCarthy confirmed parts of the story, recalling an unforgettable night with Lowe, Gilbert, Minnelli, and Davis Jr. He said the group spent time at Davis Jr.’s house, where “we did a lot of drinking” while the sober entertainer played bartender.
While he does not remember Jackson being present, McCarthy said Minnelli later drove him home because he had too much to drink. “She was super lovely to me,” he said.
The actor also praised Minnelli and Davis Jr. for their kindness, describing the evening as “Rat Pack meets the Brat Pack.”
McCarthy previously reflected on the night in the 2024 Hulu documentary Brats, recalling his amazement at suddenly finding himself seated next to Minnelli at Spago during the height of the Brat Pack era.
